Lapsang Souchong is one of those love it or hate it kinds of teas. Personally, we absolutely love them.
At Tea Runners, we're tasted and tested dozens of Lapsangs to make our selections. We look for a balance of a wonderful tasting tea at an affordable price. Compared to our other Lapsang Souchong listing, this product - Organic Lapsang Souchong - has a more balanced flavor profile and the other benefits that come from a longer leaf tea.
This distinctive organic black tea is crafted through a unique drying process over pinewood, infusing it with a rich, smoky aroma and a deep, full-bodied liquor. The tea leaves are first withered over pine root fires, then pan-fried, rolled, and oxidized. To complete the process, the leaves are placed in bamboo baskets and suspended above smoldering pinewood fires, allowing them to absorb the robust, smoky essence. The result is a tea with a bold, smoky fragrance and a smooth, satisfying taste.
Legend has it that this method of smoking black tea originated in ancient tribal times, when villagers accidentally smoked their tea while burning their possessions. Another story from the Qing Dynasty suggests that an army passing through a village took over a tea factory filled with freshly harvested leaves. Pressed for time to get the tea to market, workers dried the leaves over pinewood fires to speed up the process. When the tea reached the market, its unique smoky flavor became an instant sensation, giving rise to this remarkable tea.
